Favourite Decisions

It’s easy to mix up the parts of our work into a huge bundle. So let’s break things apart.

There’s the output part, what we produce.
There’s the scheduling part, how we divide your day.
There’s the location part, where our work happens.
There’s the coworkers part, who we work with.
There’s the skills part, what we exercise and grow, like we do with muscles.

And there’s the role part, the title part, what we say to others we do, wrapping up the whole bundle.

But there’s also this other part: the decisions part.

Just like we only have so many hours in a day, we can only make so many decisions in a day too.

We tire ourselves making too many decisions, so we better choose which type of decisions we make.

Today, so many decisions can be delegated to someone else, to automation, or to our new super-intelligent tools. And if we’re smart, we’re getting paid for decisions we don’t have to make because we’re delegating those decisions to our subconscious. Those decisions are second nature to us now, so we never have to think too much.

So what decisions will you be keeping to yourself?

Maybe it’ll be that you decide how you’ll lead and teach other people.
Maybe you’ll want to keep architecture decisions for yourself, because those are your favourite decisions to make.
Maybe you really like scheduling events, sequencing activities, designing a visual thing, or lifting things with your body.
Maybe you like to decide how to interact with people, and make the world work.

In a world where we can automate, delegate and eliminate, which kind of decision is your favourite kind to make?
