Expert Wall Mover
There comes a point when walls just start moving.
Here’s a story about personal progress:
We start off on a path, learning new skills, trying things out, making discoveries.
Then, we get some adversity, and things get messy.
We overcome this one trial, and then another one after that.
But then, we hit a wall. And the wall doesn’t budge.
“I can’t get past this invisible ceiling in my career progression.”
“I try really hard, and no matter the amount of effort, I get back to the same starting point.”
“I’m tied up in my circumstances. Maybe I should just accept them.”
—
“Of what am I so convinced?”
If there is one question that moves walls, walls defining our circumstances, this question might be it.
So we start identifying our convictions.
“Unless I please every one of my clients, I soon won’t get any more.”
The expert wall mover has a response to this conviction.
“Maybe.”
This puts us into a mode where we can edit our convictions.
“Maybe if I focus on finding better clients, and parting ways with the wrong clients, I’ll get more of the good ones.”
“I’ve got skills that I’ll never master, because I’m not meant to be good at those skills.”
“Maybe I can find a way to not have to master these skills, or maybe I can master them, more easily than I thought. Maybe I can get good at marketing. Maybe I can outsource that part. Maybe things aren’t what I’m convinced they are.”
—
This ability to edit one’s own convictions, that’s the main ability of an expert wall mover. We start realizing that this limit we thought we had, it’s actually moveable.
All of a sudden the wall just starts moving, and we’re back in progress.
